According to the latest reports by police, the following are some of the reasons why the fight against terrorism is hard task.
1. Locals.
Al Shabaab group usually lure locals youth are lured to join the radical groups with a promise of a better future, they are equipped with terror skills to execute the militia group orders.
“We are aware the terror group is recruiting local youth, training them and turning them against their own people,” said Chrispus Mutali, the police commander of Lamu County.
2. Victimisation.
Residents in most of the affected regions such as Mandera, Garissa and Lamu fear to point out members of al shabaab.
“Whenever we carry out operations to trace down suspects, they just disappear and melt into the villages. That says one thing: they belong in those villages and once they enter, it’s tough to get them. No one will point them out lest they be victimised,” Mutali explained.
3. Know places and people.
The terror activities are always carried out by locals who are familiar with the environment.
Mutali further said, “These attackers know every villager by name. They know every corner of the county and its villages. They know every pathway. They know where police posts are situated. Now you can’t tell me a Somali can do that on his It’s obvious locals are working with them, which is very unfortunate.”
During the 2014 Mpeketoni attacks, 65 locals were shot dead, the al shabaab identified the people with their names before killing them.
