Dar es Salaam. Some angry and rowdy residents of Bunju “A” yesterday stormed and burnt down a police post located in the area after a car knocked down a primary school pupil who died on the spot.
Three people are in police custody for their suspected involvement in the incident.
Witnesses who spoke with The Citizen said, apparently the residents burnt the police post following misunderstandings between them and the police officers after the accident. They said that rescue workers from the Fire Brigade went to extinguish the flames, but it was too little too late.
The incident happened around 9am after a minibus hit a pupil of Bunju ‘A’ Primary School, who was named as Thabitha Omari (11).
After the acciddent, a group of pupils blocked the Dar es Salaam-Bagamoyo road for some hours and demonstrated to the police post to express their anger following the death of their schoolmate.
According to Kinondoni Regional Police Commander Camilius Wambura’s account, when he arrived at the scene, eye witnesses told him that the main reason for the accident was lack of speed bumps.
Residents said, the scene has been a blind spot with many accidents claiming lives in the recent past because of speeding.
However, as Mr Wambura was consulting with officials of the Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads), a group of angry residents took the matter into their hands and marched to the police post, where they set it ablaze.
Speaking over the matter, Mr Wambura said: “stringent legal action will be taken against all those who were involved in burning the post and causing loss of properties and documents.”
