Karatu. The Karatu District Council, which has been under Chadema for a decade and a half now, has awarded President Jakaya Kikwete a plot.
Mr Lazaro Maasai, the chairman of the just resolved district council, said they resolved to award the President the plot to acknowledge his input in the achievements of the area.
“We know the President has a big plot at his Msoga home village, but since we value his contribution, we believe he will as well develop one in Karatu,” he told Arusha regional commissioner Felix Ntibenda who was the chief guest to the last full council meeting.
He said the council though was an opposition stronghold had registered achievements in different areas without the government interference.
“The Kikwete Administration has provided Sh1.3 billion for the construction of the state-of-the-art administration building of the council which is never found anywhere else in the country except in Karatu,” he said.
Karatu had throughout the 15 years of leadership of the council had received unqualified accounts 14 times, said Mr Maasai, adding that the council’s receipts had risen from Sh370 million to Sh1.3 billion.
The number of secondary schools had jumped from one in 2000 to 32 this year, while primary schools had also shot up from 49 to 102, and dispensaries from four to 41 .
“We only had two health centres then, but we’re now proud of having 10 of them and a hospital,” said Mr Maasai, prompting the regional commissioner to commend what he said was the country’s exemplary local government.
“I am proud of Karatu District Council, for you have performed very well, given the fact that I myself was promoted from district commissioner to regional commissioner from this very place,” said Mr Ntibenda.
He prayed that all councillors be re-elected during the October General Election.
However, Mr Maasai declared during the farewell council meeting that he would not defend his councillorship post. He was also awarded a plot for his 10-year leadership.
