this is what Exactly Happens to MPESA money when One Dies

Many Kenyans have been asking what happens to somebody’s MPesa balance when he dies without revealing his pin to his/ her spouse or close family members.

Safaricom now says the funds held in an M-Pesa account can be passed on to a customer’s next of kin once claims from the beneficiary are validated.

“We require that the next of kin should visit any Safaricom Shop and provide certain documents for inspection and approval before any funds can be released,” the Safaricom website directs.

The documents to be presented include copies of the death certificate, ID of the next of kin and grant of probate.

The above conditions are mandatory for accounts with more than Sh30, 000.

For accounts with less than Sh 30,000, you will need an affidavit administered by a Commissioner of Oaths and sworn by the claimant, a death certificate (not burial permit), a letter from the provincial administration of the deceased’s area of residence or letters of administration and the next of kin’s ID and copy to be retained.

To avoid this time consuming process, it is good to share your pin with your spouse or a family member to avoid your money being taken by strangers while your children are suffering.
